SACRAMENT OF HEALING

Anointing of the Sick

Christ's healing presence for those facing illness, surgery, or the frailty of age.

Christ's Healing Touch

The Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing — not a sign of death. Through it, the Church commends the sick to the suffering and glorified Lord, asking him to strengthen and save them.

This sacrament brings spiritual strength, peace, courage, and sometimes even physical healing. It unites the suffering person to Christ's own passion, for the good of the person and of the whole Church.

Who Can Receive This Sacrament?

  • Those facing serious illness or surgery
  • The elderly who have become frail due to age
  • Those with chronic illness or long-term conditions
  • Those who are dying or in danger of death
  • The anointing may be received multiple times as illness progresses

“Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.”

JAMES 5:14

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this only for those who are dying?

No. This is one of the most common misconceptions. Anointing of the Sick is meant for anyone who is seriously ill, facing major surgery, or struggling with the frailty of old age. One need not be near death.

How do I request this sacrament?

Contact the parish office at any time. In urgent situations, please call the office and ask for a priest.

Can the sacrament be celebrated at home or hospital?

Yes. Our priest is able to visit you at home, in hospital, or in a care facility. Please let us know your needs and we will arrange a time.

Can family members be present?

Yes, and we encourage it. Having family gathered can be a powerful and consoling experience for everyone present.

Is it too late if someone is unconscious?

The Church teaches that the sacrament may still be given even if a person is unconscious, as long as they would have asked for it when they were able to do so.
